Bentley takes county in run-off

Slightly over 67 percent of those voting Tuesday in the primary run-off election in Cleburne County cast their vote for Robert Bentley for Governor.

The 768 votes cast in his favor helped Bentley to become the GOP's nominee for Governor this fall and he will take on Democratic contender Ron Sparks.

In Cleburne County, Bentley's opponent, Bradley Byrne, received 367 votes.

Other unofficial results for Cleburne County were:

Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries — Dorman Grace — 592, John McMillan — 434.

Public Service Commission Place No. 1 — Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh — 439, Stephen Evans — 526.

Attorney General — James Anderson — 52, Giles Perkins — 31.

A total of 1,223 votes were cast in Cleburne County with 1,140 Republican and only 83 or 6.79 percent Democrat.

In statewide finals, McMillan is the GOP nominee for Agriculture Commissioner, Cavanaugh for Public Service Commission and Anderson for Attorney General.

Republican National Convention Chairman Michael Steele issued the following statement concerning the run-off election in Alabama.

"Congratulations to state Rep. Robert Bentley and Martha Roby on their victories this evening.

"Rep. Bentley is a strong candidate who will no doubt ensure that the Republican Party will continue to hold the Governor's seat in Alabama."
