As we approach Veterans Day the Sumners family of the Abel Community certainly know what it is all about to be a veteran and a member of the military services.

From the Civil War to the wars in the Mid-East, the Sumners have been there.

"We have always been proud to serve our country," said Kenneth Sumners.

Sumners said his great-grandfather served in the 38th GA Infantry during the Civil War, his father Leon in WW II and himself as a military policeman.

"We just like to keep it all in the family. Personally, I'd like to see all young men serve at least two years," Sumners added.

Family members, sons and grandsons, now in the military include Daniel, James, Kenneth III, Cody, Kenneth Jr. and Monroe.

In recognition of county veterans, the local American Legion Post 19, in conjunction with the City of Heflin, will hold an event at 2 p.m.. on Veterans Day at the Legion War Memorial.

Placing of flowers to honor the living and dead is encouraged. Light refreshments will be served.
