Prep roundup: Jacksonville baseball splits pair of home games

Jacksonville High split a pair of home baseball games Saturday, losing to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 10-7 and beating Boaz 7-6.

Against Hillcrest, Payton Sims was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs. Chris Elias was 2-for-2 and drove in a run. Tyler Carter doubled and scored twice, while Lavontae LaCount had a double.

Alabama football signee Keith Holcombe was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI for Hillcrest while batting leadoff.

Against Boaz, Sims pitched a complete game to get the win, striking out 13 and allowing seven hits.

At the plate, he was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Sid Thurmond was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Chance Marbut was 2-for-3 with a double.

Oxford 13, Russell County 2: Pitcher Nathan Lloyd lifted the Yellow Jackets to their first win of the day with his five-strikeout performance over six innings of work. He surrendered only one hit.

Oxford 5, Oak Mountain 4: Drake Champion led Oxford to its second win of the day with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jacob Cook earned the win after relieving starting pitcher Dillen Miller in the sixth inning. Cook allowed one hit and struck out two in his 1 1/3 inning of work. Miller allowed four hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 9, Oxford 2: The Yellow Jackets suffered their first loss of the season in their final game Saturday.

Mason Wilkins started the game on the mound and recorded two strikeouts in four innings. The Patriots managed six hits against him.

Dax Winningham took the mound in relief of Wilkins in the fifth and allowed two hits and struck out three in three innings.

The Yellow Jackets (5-1) return to action Tuesday at Southside-Gadsden at 4:30 p.m.

Spring Garden 14, Asbury 1: Grant Benefield pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 14.

Dylan Kirk had a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Dawson Broome contributed two hits. Andrew McLarty, Colton Lambert, Austin Stordahl and Benefield each had a hit.

Spring Garden 18, Butler 1: Kirk had two hits and two RBIs, while McLarty added two hits as well and drove in a run.

Benefield, Broome, Will Ivey, Riley Austin, Will Westbrook, Stordahl and Lambert each had a hit.

Five pitchers (McLarty, Dylan Short, Dylan Lewis, Taylor Hardin and Stordahl) each threw an inning and combined to allow only two hits.

The Panthers will travel to Crossville for a doubleheader Monday.

Alexandria 11, Brooks 6: Cody Dodd gave the Valley Cubs their first win of the season after pitching four innings and striking out three.

Alexandria 12, Boaz 2: Ethan Curvin’s four strikeouts in five innings lifted Alexandria to its second win of the season.

Alexandria 18, Russell County 2: Junior pitcher Justin Whitley led Alexandria to its third win of the season in Saturday’s final game. He pitched four innings and struck out four batters.

Curvin led the Valley Cubs with seven hits on the day. Dalton Cobb added six hits. Derrik Turner, Riley Shaw, Dakota Kelley and Michael Campbell each finished with four hits on the day.

Alexandria (3-0) returns to action Monday at Etowah.

Brooks 10-2, Jacksonville 8-15: On Friday, Lavontae LaCount went 7-for-8 with a pair of doubles, two homers and seven RBIs as Jacksonville split a doubleheader at home.

In the first game, Brooks’ 10-8 win, LaCount was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs. Sid Thurmond, B.J. Murphy and Chris Elias each went 2-for-4. Murphy had a triple.

In the 15-2 win in the second game, LaCount went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs. Chance Marbut was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Jackson Bell was 2-for-2 with a double, and Murphy was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Payton Sims went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sims and Murphy scored twice each.

Marbut pitched and worked all five innings, striking out six and allowing four hits.

Softball

Oxford won six times in six games this weekend to take the Central Alabama Classic in Alex City.

The Yellow Jackets beat Stanhope Elmore 5-1, Valley 5-1, Beulah 9-1, Handley 3-1, Stanhope Elmore 5-2 and Prattville in the finals 10-7.

Jo Jo Skinner went 3-0, striking out 11 in 18 innings. Rylee Waldrop struck out 17 in 18 innings.

At the plate, Lexie Higgins was 12-for-17 with three doubles, a triple, two homers and four RBIs, while Tearanie Henderson was 7-for-17 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs.

Jenn Turner went 7-for-15 with two doubles, a homer and seven RBIs. Haley Lyner was 5-for-10 with a homer and four RBIs. Morgan Whaley went 3-for-14 with a home run and three RBIs. Kendra Larkin was 4-for-13 at the plate with three RBIs.

Oxford (6-1) will play at Benjamin Russell on Monday.

Tennis

Faith Christian girls 6, Victory Christian 3: Ryleigh Freeman and seventh-grader Zana Christjohn, in her first varsity match, won at No. 3 doubles to propel the Faith Christian girls. Faith won four of the singles matches to improve to 2-0.

Victory Christian boys 6, Faith Christian 3: Seventh-grader Zac Gattrell won his first singles match at No. 6, and the No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Crosby and David Wall picked up a key sectional win, but the Lions fell to 1-1 for the season. Faith Christian will host Donoho on Wednesday.
