First Sgt. Wendell Thompson of Jacksonville was recently awarded the Soldier’s Medal for his act of heroism. During a heavy rainstorm December 2012, Jaban Lancaster of Anniston went into a ditch with his car being overturned. Thompson was assisted by another passerby, William Learner-Lange, as they took turns holding the unconscious and trapped Lancaster out of the water until emergency personnel arrived.
