Don’t worry, NFL and SEC. Change’s bark is much worse than its bite.

More often than not, change is just awareness of what was always there.

Yes, the SEC co-defensive player of the year and likely NFL draft pick Michael Sam went public this past weekend, announcing something his Missouri teammates already knew. He’s gay, like people in all walks.

For those who see the mere act of someone like Sam coming out as a taunt over losing culture wars, relax. It was about Michael Sam, not anyone else. He had both personal and practical reasons for coming out.

Besides, if military folks who rely on the comrade next to them for survival can get over it, then we all can.

Retroactively, we now know that there was an openly gay SEC player, at least to his teammates, and Sam may become the first publicly out NFL player. He won’t be the last, and his coming out will inspire others to do so.

Don’t be surprised when former or current SEC players come out. Don’t be surprised to learn that Missouri wasn’t the first team aware of a gay teammate.

Again, change often is just awareness of what was always there. If those who live and die in fox holes can handle it, then those who change in locker rooms or cheer in stands can.
