STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Jacksonville State softball team goes into the second day of the Mississippi State Kickoff Classic on Saturday after getting through two games Friday virtually untouched.

Senior Tiffany Harbin and sophomore Casey Akenberger both threw five-inning, mercy-rule no-hitters Friday as the Gamecocks opened their season with a 9-0 win over Northern Kentucky and an 8-0 win over Mississippi Valley.

It’s the first time they’ve opened the year with a no-hitter and first time they’ve thrown two in the same day, JSU said in an athletics department release.

"On Opening Day it's always good to get off on the right foot, but you never expect to throw two no-hitters," JSU head coach Jana McGinnis said in the release.

Northern Kentucky went 11-41 last year in its first season of Division I play. MVSU went 25-32 last year, but won the SWAC.

The competition expects to be appreciably stiffer today when the Gamecocks play tournament host Mississippi State.

Harbin struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced, including the first eight, in throwing the fifth no-hitter and 60th win over her JSU career. A hit batsman in the fourth inning ruined the perfect game.

Akenberger faced the minimum. She walked one in the third, but erased the runner on a double play, part of nine ground-ball outs she got in the game.

At the plate, Sara Borders went 4-for-6 in the two games, while Cadi Oliver had five RBIs.
