If John Thompson is interested in the defensive coordinator’s job on new Jacksonville State coach John Grass’ staff, he isn’t saying.

The former East Carolina head coach and Arkansas State defensive coordinator deferred any comment Wednesday to Grass.

“I wish I could (confirm), I really, really, really wish I could,” Thompson said. “That would need to come from Coach Grass.”

Sources familiar with the search have said Thompson and former Arkansas State and Georgia Southern defensive coordinator Kevin Corless are among the coaches Grass is interested in interviewing.

Grass wasn’t immediately available for comment Wednesday. On Monday, the newly installed head coach said a decision on the position might not come until after next week’s National Signing Day.

Thompson, 58, has been a defensive coordinator at virtually every coaching stop he’s made. He was East Carolina’s head coach for two seasons. He spent the past two seasons at Arkansas State and was named interim head coach each year, leading the Red Wolves to wins in the GoDaddy Bowl.

His defense ranked third in the Sun Belt in scoring defense last season. The year before, it led the conference.

Thompson has no previous connection with Grass. He is close with former Texas assistant coach Mike Tolleson, an Anniston native.

“Anytime Anniston comes up, I think about Tolley,” Thompson said.

A phone number The Star had for Corless was no longer assigned to him.
