Spring Garden High’s girls basketball team finally got the best of Sand Rock, and it came at a great time.

In two previous meetings, Spring Garden had fallen both times, but on Saturday, the Panthers scored a 49-42 win in the Cherokee County Tournament.

Spring Garden (17-3) entered as the No. 5 team in the state in Class 1A, while Sand Rock (20-2) is No. 7 in 2A.

Haley Motes led Spring Garden with 15 points, while Tykeah Rogers added 14. Darian Gaines had 13.

For Sand Rock, Courtney Rowe had 13 points.

Wrestling

Weaver High’s wrestlers finished second in the Jeremy Ragsdale Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The Bearcats scored 145 points, which placed behind Arab’s 263. Hewitt-Trussville was third with 142 points.

Weaver placed four wrestlers in the top four of their divisions.

Wil Mizic was second in the 134-pound division, and Jacob Howard matched that in the 140-pound class.

At 108 pounds, Nick Souder was third, while Macklin Crook was fourth at 287 pounds.

Weaver will wrestle again Monday at Wellborn in the Panther Duals.
