Buster Miles Ford of Heflin is offering two college scholarships at $1,000 each to be awarded to local FFA members, one for Ranburne High School and one for Cleburne County High School, through the 2013-2014 Built Ford Tough-FFA Scholarship program. Applications must be completed online by Feb. 2 and signature page must be postmarked no later than Feb. 8. Cheaha Creative Arts, Inc., will offer beginner’s ballet classes in January 2014. The instructor will be Leigh Ann Wilder. American Red Cross volunteers of the Calhoun-Cleburne Chapter of Project SHARE winter season is accepting calls from potential applicants. The program is designed to give financial assistance to qualified individuals with their energy bills (electric, gas, butane or wood) once during the winter season (Jan. 1-June 30). The elderly, 62 and older, on low fixed incomes with no other source of funds and those disabled and receiving 100 percent disability are eligible for Project SHARE. Sign up/audition, to join a full orchestra in Calhoun County, will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Harvest International Ministry, 707 Wilmer Ave. No experience necessary. The audition’s main purpose is to meet the director, concert pianist, Reinaldo Whyte. There will only be 32 spots available on a first come, first served basis. Walk-ins are welcome. A Watershed Academy will be held 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Cane Creek Community Garden at Fort McClellan. The two-day workshop is sponsored by the Choccolocco Creek Watershed Alliance, Auburn University and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The academy is designed to be an all-inclusive package of courses, field classes and demonstrations which bring together the concepts of low impact development, smart watershed and streamside management, and water quality topics for municipal officials, concerned residents and landowners alike. An AARP safe driving class will be 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at Parker Memorial Baptist Church. Upon completion of the class you may qualify for a discount, up to 10 percent, on your auto insurance. The Talladega Optimist Club invites students to compete in both essay and oratorical scholarship programs for academic year 2013-2014. Home schooled, as well as students in both public and private schools are encouraged to apply. Local contests offer cash prizes up to $100. Winners in the Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi district contests receive scholarships up to $2,500.

The essay topic for 2013-2014 is “How Dreams Lead to Success.” Contestants compose an original essay with limited guidance from others, length 700-800 words. The deadline to receive essays with completed applications is Jan. 17, 2014. Late entries will not be accepted. However, the local winner must provide a copy of the birth certificate to go forward to district-level competition.

The oratorical topic is “How My Passions Impact the World.” The time allotted will be not under four minutes or over five minutes.
