Millions of Americans spend these first few weeks of the new year trying to shed some of their winter weight. Likewise, obesity is at epidemic proportions in the United States, especially in the South.

Answering a simple question about that obesity -- Why? -- doesn't necessarily lead to easy solutions.

Interestingly, an essay printed this week in the Los Angeles Times, "The conspiracy to keep you fat," is a good place to start for those wanting to know the background of Americans' quite noticeable weight gains of the last few decades. It's not as obvious as it seems.
