Prep basketball roundup: Shurbutt's big day paces Alexandria

Alexandria High picked up a win Monday before breaking for Christmas.

The Valley Cubs defeated Saks 41-26 in a regular-season contest. Timberlyn Shurbutt led the winners with 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Ariel Tuck added 10 points.

Alexandria (5-6) will return to work almost as soon as the Christmas presents are unwrapped.

The Valley Cubs will play in a tournament at Handley, beginning Thursday.

Anniston 36, Center Point 32: At Fort Payne on Saturday in the Wills Valley Shootout, Quanetria Bolton’s double-double led Anniston. She scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Ki-Yana Bullock recorded 10 points and seven rebounds. Anniston led 20-16 at halftime.

The Bulldogs (9-3) will play Keith of Orrville at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Dwight Madison Roundball tournament at G.W. Carver High in Montgomery.

Woodland 62, Sand Rock 42: In the championship game of the Cherokee County Invitational in Centre on Saturday, Woodland improved to 11-0 on the season and handed Sand Rock its first loss.

Leah Strain scored 29 points for the Bobcats. She made 5 of 7 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter and 8 of 11 in the contest.

Shalyn Strain contributed 11 points to the win, and Adre Bowen scored 10 points.

Woodland will return to action Thursday at Rogersville in the Lauderdale County Christmas tournament.

The Bobcats play at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of an earlier game between Wilson and Tharptown.
