I was a college student at the University of New Mexico on Nov. 22, 1963. I remember walking through the cafeteria of the student union building on my way home when the announcement came, “President Kennedy has just been shot in Dallas, Texas. His wounds appear to be grave.” I froze in mid-stride, unbelieving such a terrible thing could really be true. But, on arriving home, I watched the unfolding news story with my parents. A terrible piece of history had been added to my 19-year-old world, coloring our days in shades of gray for many days, weeks and months thereafter.
