HEFLIN — The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a bonus of $200 for full-time city employees and $50 for part-time employees.

City Clerk Shane Smith also presented council members with the option of a $100 bonus for full-time employees and $50 for part-time employees, noting that the city paid the $100 to full-time workers last year.

Mayor Rudy Rooks noted that the council is barred by state law from describing the payments as a bonus, so the council termed it a "one-time pay increase" instead.

Smith said the city’s cost for the $200/$50 bonus would be $6,608, while the lesser bonus option would have cost $3,970.

“We’ve got room for that in our budget,” Rooks said at Tuesday’s meeting. “I would just like to recommend doing the $200 just for the simple fact that we were not able to give a pay increase this time.”

The city’s staff will receive the bonus on the paycheck issued the week of Thanksgiving.

Council member Travis Crowe said he also thought $200 was reasonable.

“For $100 you can’t buy anything,” Crowe said.

In other business the council:

— Approved adding a street light at the end of Leeander Street at Councilman Shannon Roberts' request. There was also a second request for a streetlight on the street, but Roberts didn’t recommend adding that one. Councilman Elvin Henson also received a request for a streetlight on Franklin Street. However, he thought city policy wouldn’t allow the city to add a light at that location because it would be used for just one address, he said.

— Approved entering into a contract with Birmingham-based Bagby Elevator for $1,444.

— Heard the Senior Tailgate Party for senior citizens will be Nov. 27. Organizers have yet to set a location for the event.

— Heard the Christmas Marketplace and Festival of Trees will be Dec. 13-15 at the Heflin Civic Center.

— Heard the Christmas Parade of Lights will be Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. on Ross Street.

The next council meeting will be Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Editor's note: This story has been modified to note that Heflin city officials did not refer to the the extra pay for city workers a "bonus," but rather a one-time pay increase. Also, the name of Leeander Street has been corrected.
