Make This: Concussions, cramped quarters just don’t get the creative juices f lowing

Over the last week, I’ve been suffering from a bit of creative block. Creative block is like writer’s block, but instead of staring at a blank computer screen for hours, I’m staring at a glue gun.

I have plenty of ideas — with Pinterest, I can’t not be inspired — but the block I’m suffering from stems from a lack of time and space.

It probably has to do with the fact I’m having part of my house remodeled, so what was formerly my laundry room is now a rectangular hole dug in red clay with rebar sticking out of it. My water heater is perched out in the middle of my back yard. My washer and dryer are sitting useless in my kitchen, where a table used to be. A table that now sits in my already cramped sewing room, covered with small appliances and a box of baked goods.

So as you can imagine, my sewing room has become a bit of a disaster — buttons and zippers scattered everywhere and scissors buried beneath contractor contracts, estimates from electricians and a bill from the HVAC guy. Yep, my furnace broke, too. And he found a leak while he was under the house. Told me to call a plumber. And the day before that, there was an emergency trip to the doctor to check my daughter for a concussion …

Yes, time and space have become scarce (hot water has also become scarce, but that’s a whole other situation. Just stay downwind of me and you should be fine). And with Winter Market creeping up, I’m getting a little antsy because I’m not creating as much as I would like.

Luckily, before this disastrous week, I actually managed to build up a good amount of stock — you won’t believe some of the things I’m making out of zippers. And loyal readers (if I have any, that is) may recognize some items from past columns.

So swing by Nov. 8 or 9 and see all us vendors at Winter Market... I’m sure the rest of them are much more together than I am.

New sewing shop

Sew Universal, a new shop specializing in custom clothes, alterations and home decor, is opening at 230 Choccolocco St. in downtown Oxford. Swing by the open house Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and see what it’s all about. They also sell Christmas crafts and decorations.
