IRONATON — A Talladega County business owner is dead following a robbery attempt that also left a suspect in the crime with serious injuries.

Interim Talladega Police Chief Jason Busby confirmed that Earnest Jenkins, owner of Jenkins’ Grocery Store at the intersection of Stockdale and Ironaton roads, was killed during what appeared to be a robbery Friday morning.

Busby also said one of the suspects had been shot, and had been airlifted to University Hospital in Birmingham by helicopter. No information on his condition was available Friday evening.

Busby said investigators were continuing to question potential witnesses and family members, adding that little more specific information could be released pending the ongoing investigation.

He said Talladega police were first alerted to the crime by a 911 call coming into central dispatch at 8:23 a.m. He did not know who placed the first call.

No arrests had been made as of Friday evening as the investigation continued.

Anyone with information on this incident should contact the Talladega Police Department at 256-362-4508 or call the city’s anonymous tip line at 256-299-0011.
