LINCOLN — Quint Dobbins found DeMarcus Thomas for a 35-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to lift Anniston to a 22-21 victory at Lincoln.

Dobbins provided the margin of victory with the extra point.

Lincoln had gone ahead 21-15 when Jalen Turner intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Mason McLean’s third extra point of the night put Lincoln ahead by six.

Anniston needed only 51 seconds to take the lead for good. The Bulldogs drove 66 yards on three plays for the winning touchdown.

Dobbins found Thomas near the left sideline, who cut back and made two defenders miss on his way to the end zone.

“We are a young ball club and one of the problems we have is we’ll shoot ourselves in the foot,” Anniston head coach Eddie Bullock said. “We’ll do something great, then we’ll take a step back. Once we correct that, we’re really going to be a good team.”

Bullock spoke highly of his team, praising the efforts of Thomas, who racked up eight carries for 64 rushing yards, two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown, 122 combined return yardage and the game-sealing interception.

“I challenged him,” Bullock said. “He’s hasn’t played football since his freshman year. He’s the type of athlete who can make plays, and I have some more like him who can make the plays. But we have to be disciplined and he stepped up to the plate. He was leading people on the sidelines. He really stepped up and showed his leadership.”

Anniston took a 2-0 lead early with a safety. Lincoln managed a touchdown for a 7-2 lead by halftime.

The Golden Bears took charge on the first series of the second half, converting a fourth-and-one play on a fake punt. That led to another touchdown and a 14-2 lead.

Thomas broke free for 46 yards on the kickoff return, setting up Anniston for a 23-yard scoring pass from Dobbins to Dar’Monte Miller for a 23-yard touchdown. Dobbins kicked the extra point to bring Anniston within five, 14-9.

Later in the half, Anniston’s Thomas returned the punt 76 yards to Lincoln’s 4-yard line.

Two plays later, Anniston fullback Donovan Lucas scored on a 2-yard carry for a 15-14 lead.
