Those who attended last year’s event watched as Rodney Owens, Beth Rogers, Hardy Jackson, Ronnie Smith and emcee Derek Brown roasted and toasted JSU President Bill Meehan.
“We laughed a lot that night,” said Mandi King, who serves as the board secretary. “And it was all for a good cause.”
Brown, a longtime supporter of the Center of Concern agrees, and that is why he is returning as emcee this year when Phil Webb, owner of Webb Concrete and Building Materials, will be hailed as the “Man of the Hour.”
Phil graciously agreed to take his turn in the “hot seat” to raise money for the center, a non-profit charitable organization that has served the needy in this area since the 1950s.
“The center was originally founded as a food and clothing bank but has expanded over the years to include medical assistance and help with utility bills or transportation,” explained Chairman of the Board Bert Oelschig.
Tickets for the event include a three-course dinner provided by Classic on Noble owners David and Cathy Mashburn. Cathy, a Center of Concern board member, is also co-chairing the fundraiser along with Donna Barton. Tea will be served with the meal and a cash bar will be available for other types of liquid nourishment.
The evening begins with appetizers at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7. At 8 p.m., the roasting will get underway. This year’s roasters include Larry Deason, president of Farmers and Merchants Bank; David McCormack, CEO of Regional Medical Center; Julia Segars, vice-president of Alabama Power’s Eastern Division; and Rick Dawson, co-owner of Dawson’s Vision Center.
A word of caution to the roasting panel: Once you’re done having your fun, it will be Phil’s turn to share a story or two about you — that’s what they call having the last laugh.
Tickets are $50 per person, and are on sale at Classic on Noble, Webb Showroom in Oxford and Farmers and Merchants Bank on Quintard in Anniston. Tickets can also be purchased from any Center of Concern board member including Hank Waide, Bill Manning, Dianne Green, Judy Myers, Mary Jones, Dee Rochester or Father Bryan Lowe.
Tables can be reserved with a credit card by calling Donna Barton at 256-237-1713. Reserved tables seat six to eight guests and the cost is the $50 per person ticket price plus an additional $200.
“The sooner one calls, the better,” Donna cautions. “It will be first come, first served on table location.”
Board member Charles Doster and his wife, Juliette, were the first to reserve a table and are looking forward to a fun night out with friends. More information can be found at annistonevents.com.
