AUBURN -- Head coach Gus Malzahn deflected any attempt to update the status of starting left defensive end Dee Ford.

He said Ford didn't practice Thursday, but declined to give a timetable for his return. When asked whether Ford would miss the season opener Aug. 31, Malzahn responded, "I would definitely hope not."

Safety Demetruce McNeal practiced and "looked 100 percent," Malzahn said. Hybrid safety/linebacker Justin Garrett attended practice but didn't participate.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Three walk-ons were awarded scholarships Wednesday night: wide receiver Dimitri Reese, defensive back Blake Poole and running back Chandler Shakespeare.
