The firefighters who serve in our communities provide a valuable service to its residents, not only through fighting fires but also emergency medical care, assistance in hazardous weather, carbon monoxide response and natural disasters. I am humbled by the stories of countless firefighters who sacrifice body and spirit for the betterment of those citizens they protect.
Each year, firefighters across the country and central Alabama team up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the “Fill the Boot” program. Local fire departments hit the streets raising money to benefit MDA. During the summer and fall months, these hometown heroes will be out at local intersections and shopping centers filling the boot to help MDA.
Firefighters have been supporting MDA for over 50 years. Their good work in our community at large as well as for MDA is truly making a difference in the lives of others.
I encourage everyone to thank firefighters for all they do in their communities and support them in their efforts in 2013.
