Faciane redshirted in 2011 before appearing in seven games in 2012 when games were well in hand. Saban said Faciane can return if he “does the things he is supposed to do at some point in the future.”
Meanwhile, freshman defensive end Darius Paige has been medically disqualified after failing a physical examination. Paige was cleared to enroll in July, but this latest piece of news is a major setback for the four-star defensive lineman, who finished his career at Foley High.
“Darius Paige has medical issues that have caused our medical staff to think that it is not safe for him to try to play. ... He is here and we are helping to support him and he will be on scholarship and will get an education,” Saban said. "Our medical staff is working with him right now to try to help improve his condition.”
Saban would not comment further on what specifically caused Paige to fail the exam.
Paige not being able to play cleared the way for offensive lineman Bradley Bozeman of Handley to join the team this fall.
“Our numbers were where they needed to be relatively to initials and 85 and all that,” Saban said. “When Darius didn’t pass the physical and got medically disqualified that gave us an extra spot.”
Wide receiver Robert Foster is in camp and expected to practice tonight, Saban said. Foster was the last player of the Tide’s 2013 recruiting class to be cleared to join the team.
“He's here and ready to go as far as I know,” Saban said. “I've been told he's supposed to practice tonight. If he doesn't, it will be a surprise to me.”
