Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the 41-year-old victim paid a man in Vacaville, Calif. a deposit of $585 to stay in a condominium in Panama City, which she found listed on Craigslist. The woman received an email from the suspect that he would meet her at the condo on July 12, George said. When she arrived, George said, she was told by the condo’s management that the suspect does not manage the property and had no right to take her deposit.
Online scams can be difficult to investigate, George said, but the police in California were familiar with the suspect and told the victim there’s a pending case against him. The captain was unsure whether the pending case was similar.
Any suspect could be charged with felony second-degree theft.
