Scouts from Heflin spent a week of summer camp at Comer Scout Reservation, Mentone, Ala and were declared the best out of nineteen troops attending. Troop 206 won every award at camp except the Water Carnival and came in third place for that event. Assistant Scoutmaster Harold Davis was recognized for attending camp at Comer Scout Reservation for forty-eight consecutive years. Davis is the only individual that has attended the camp in Mentone every year since it opened in 1966. The Heflin contingent scored first place in Campsite Inspections, Best Dressed Troop, Camp Spirit Award and overall best troop with the Honor Troop Award. Scouts competing in the water events were: Duncan Hudgins, Will Hudgins, Shane Ragsdale, Tim McCollough, Eli McCormick and Hunter Couch. Other T-206 scouts attending camp were Justice Smith, Logan Vickers, and Travis McCary. Adult Scouters who shared time at camp were Scoutmaster Jerry McCollough and Assistant Scoutmasters Harold Davis, Gary Wright and Billy McCormick. Troop Committee Members Jim Edwards, Glea Sarrell, D.J.Hudgins and Cubmaster Joe Smith spent at least a few nights at camp. On Thursday for Family Night, scout parents brought supper so the campers would have a brief respite from “camp food.” Heflin scouts were grateful with the great turnout from all the parents bringing “a lot” of food. Heflin’s Scout troop has a seventy year history of making summer camp the highlight of the scouting year. Troop 206 has a reputation as the BSA troop that is always the top competition for every award. With over ninety Eagles awarded throughout the Troop’s tenure many men in the Cleburne county area have spent their time on Lookout Mountain for summer camp. All the Scouts and Scouters were proud to have had another successful year with high adventure and the challenge of spending a week at camp.
