The Calhoun County High and Jacksonville State great’s accomplishments over 90 years of life are well documented and properly honored through various halls of fame, most recently the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Then, just as you go to congratulate him on that latest high honor, a friend of his walks up and brags that Wilson fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Battle of the Bulge? One of the most famous battles in history, let alone World War II history?
In typical veteran fashion, understated if stated at all, he points to his tiny, purple lapel pin and politely asks if you know what it represents. Why sure, the Purple Heart.
“I was just in the Battle of the Bulge, and I got lost and went around four or five days, trying to dodge the Germans and finally got hit,” he says with a shrug. “That’s about it.”
Uh, yeah. Wow. That’s about … it.
