There is a feeling of freedom that comes with reaching the age of 40. It’s very much like the freedom of youth when we dared to be different, do the unthinkable and achieve the unattainable. Contrary to popular belief, your 40s are not a time to settle into the mundane, but a time to recapture and reinvent.

Let’s focus on style, attitude and how we women over 40 can take our place alongside the 20- and 30-somethings without feeling the least bit antiquated or misplaced.

When you are dressed for the day, standing in front of the mirror for that last once-over before leaving home, can you honestly say that you like what you see? Do you think you look older than you really are? Did you know that your wardrobe and accessories can take years off your age or add years on?

We’re going to take a little trip which might frighten the average 40 year old, but bear with me. You’re going to love the results.

For those of us who have teenage daughters, borrow their Seventeen, Teen Vogue or any other magazine geared toward youth. (Yes, I did say Seventeen!) Flip through fast, then slower and more focused. Who says that we can’t be colorful, playful and unleash the inner femininity which may have been suppressed by marriage, motherhood and careers. We’re still prissy, girly, flirty and cute. No more taking a backseat to fashion. Be adventurous, exciting and beautiful and let these attitudes show when deciding what to wear.

Start with a bold statement piece such as turquoise, orange or hot pink cross-body bag. Break up two-piece suits by wearing the top with skinny jeans, or the bottom with a white tee and eye-catching jewelry. Not fond of the bright eye shadows? Let your lips get all the attention. Reds are always on target with corals not far behind. Why not start today and travel to a world where beauty never fades?
