A restaurant owner from Anniston has noticed Heflin and is looking to expand into the city.

David Mogil, owner of Damn Yankees Steak/Fish & Oyster Bar in Anniston, said he is in the process of buying the former Huddle House restaurant at 2190 Almon St. in Heflin to expand into Cleburne County.

“It’s great up there. I love it,” Mogil said.

He said the sale should close later this month. Gary Gaines, the listing agent for the property confirmed that Mogil is in negotiations for the building.

Mogil said once the sale goes through, he’s not sure how long it will take to open the new restaurant. He’s still trying to get financing to renovate and open. But he hopes to open Damn Yankees Steak, Ribs & Wings Sports Bar. It will be the same concept as his decade-old Anniston restaurant, but with a less extensive menu, Mogil said.

The Huddle House has been closed for approximately two years. The last business license bought for the restaurant was in 2010, but it was open for part of the 2011, according to staff at Heflin City Hall.

The building needs a lot of work, Mogil said. But he’s not afraid of the work, he said. The restaurant in Anniston also needed a lot of work before he opened, Mogil said.

Mogil said he sees opportunity in Cleburne County.

“They keep growing,” Mogil said. “And it’s true growth, things that never existed.”
