Anniston police on Monday were investigating a bust-up at a bar in the early hours of Sunday morning that led to shots being fired and a man being taken to a hospital.

According to a police report, officers responded to AJ’s Sunset Bar and Grille on Hillyer Robinson Parkway around 3 a.m. Sunday after staff at the bar reported a man had fired a gun in the parking lot. Anniston police Capt. Allen George said bar staff told police the man firing the gun was one of several people who had been kicked out of the bar earlier for fighting.

After the man ran out of ammunition, security at the bar detained the man until police arrived, George said.

Police determined that the fired gun had been reported to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office as stolen, George said. Investigators didn’t determine how the man obtained the gun, according to the report.

When questioned at the scene, the man told the responding officers he was attempting to buy drugs from an unknown man, when he was beaten by several other men and robbed of $150, George said. George said police had no suspects in the alleged robbery.

Officers took the man from the scene to Regional Medical Center with head injuries. He was released later that day, George said.

George said Monday morning that the man had not been charged, but would face charges of reckless endangerment and receiving stolen property for the handgun. All the charges are misdemeanors.
