A Piedmont family Sunday told police two members of the family sexually abused a 6-year-old girl this month.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said a male family member was accused of inappropriately touching the girl sometime between May 18 and Saturday.

Amerson said the family filed an earlier report of sexual abuse in November. However, in that circumstance, a female family member had been accused of inappropriately touching the girl.

Amerson said he did not know the status of the first report on Tuesday. The Alabama Department of Human Resources and the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center have been referred to investigate further, Amerson said.

Amerson said it is possible the family made the 6-year-old lie about who first touched her, which could be why a second report was filed.

Amerson said a specialist is needed with sexual abuse allegations because it is often hard to tell whether a child is telling the truth or not.

“When it comes to children that age getting them to tell a lie and keeping to the lie is very difficult,” he said.

The suspect could face felony charges of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.
