The first Sunday to see legal alcohol sales in Anniston resulted in police charging one man early Monday morning with driving under the influence.

A 48-year-old Anniston man was arrested at 3:28 Monday morning at the intersection of 15th Street and Kelly Avenue in Anniston, according to a police report.

The report states the man was drunk during the arrest and was charged with a misdemeanor. The man was driving a 2007 BMW, which was impounded by police, according to the report.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the man was on his way home from a bar.

George said officers found the inebriated man inside his car stopped in the middle of the road with the engine running and the headlights off. The man attempted to drive away when officers pulled up, George said, but stopped when they flashed their lights.

He refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, George said, which means he was required to spend at least 12 hours in the Anniston City Jail.

George said the Monday morning arrest was the only DUI that resulted from Sunday drinking in Anniston.
