MONTGOMERY — It’s what was written in the scorebook as “unearned” that earned seventh-ranked Saks its 2-1 win over fourth-ranked Winfield in the Class 3A state tournament Friday afternoon.

After Winfield got on the board first with an unearned run in the fourth inning, Saks responded in the top of the fifth with two unearned runs of its own.

Kendra Prater and Daisy Cornejo each walked with one out. After performing a successful double steal to get in scoring position, Prater and Cornejo scored on a high throw at first base by Winfield.

The one-run lead was all pitcher Taylor West needed. She allowed one runner over the next three innings, allowing three hits in the game and striking out 11 batters. Raegan Nunez recorded Saks’ only hit.

Saks (32-14-1) will play top-ranked Pisgah in the second round at 7 p.m. Friday.
