More than 100 reports of credit card fraud filed with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office since April were traced back to Mapco Convenience Stores, officials said Wednesday.

Matthew Wade, chief deputy, said Mapco sent out a release earlier in the week stating its database had been compromised.

“We know from reports from the Sheriff’s Office that that was absolutely true,” Wade said.

Mapco is a Brentwood, Tenn.,- based company that owns 377 convenience stores, according to Adrian Chavez, Mapco team lead.

Chavez said Wednesday evening he was uncertain how many stores or customers were affected by the security breach. There are 13 Mapco stores in Calhoun County, according to the company’s website.

“In light of all this we have updated all our security measures to prevent this sort of malware from affecting us in the future,” Chavez said.

Chavez advised anyone who may have experienced identity theft to contact their bank and check bank statements for transactions out of the ordinary.

Wade said since April his office has received over 100 reports of credit or debit card fraud.

“We know there’s more out there,” he said.

Wade said the U.S. Secret Service has been investigating the reports filed from residents across Calhoun County.

The release from Mapco stated that hackers were able to access the company’s stores’ payment card processing systems between March 19-25, April 14-15, and April 20-21.

The affected stores include MAPCO Express, MAPCO Mart, East Coast, Discount Food Mart, Fast Food and Fuel, Delta Express, and Favorite Markets in northern and central Alabama.

Mapco wrote that the company is working with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI’s Joint Cyber Crime Task Force to find the hackers.

“If you suspect that your card information may have been compromised, you should immediately contact your bank, credit union, or credit or debit card company,” the release said.
