It's no secret that Nick Saban, the University of Alabama's head football coach, is the state's highest paid public employee.  It's an old story, in fact.

However, take a look at this map from the website Deadspin. It illustrates how widespread it is across the United States for football or basketball coaches to draw the largest paychecks among state workers.

For what it's worth, Deadspin does a good job of explaining that it's difficult to look at the open-record databases for state universities and determine who's rich and who's not. Authorized booster clubs, outside endorsements and media contracts and other perks often make up a huge portion of a head coach's total salary -- which helps schools pay crazy salaries for the top coaches without causing the university itself to go bankrupt.

Nevertheless, the Deadspin map is worth a look. What it says about priorities and the market for top coaches is up for debate.
