The Alabama education system is experiencing sweeping changes, but how should we respond? Our first impulse may be to ask, “Why are our youth misbehaving?” This is a good question, but it is not the best question. The best question is “What makes an act morally right?”
Do policy writers know how to tell right from wrong? The Declaration of Independence states, “… all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights …” We must learn again that God gives rights. Indeed, if God did not exist to give a standard by which to determine morality, then right and wrong could not universally exist.
However, every person acts as if a moral standard exists that overrides individual preference. This assumption provides the basis for trust between individuals, and we feel wronged when someone betrays that trust. Therefore, we must remember that the God of the Bible has given the standard, and came as Jesus Christ to pay for our violations of His standard. Then we may be prepared to teach our children how to act.
