Scouts from Heflin Boy Scout Troop 206 practiced the theme of “participating citizenship” as they continued working on better understanding the administration and process of local government. On Tuesday the Scouts completed a Citizenship in the Community assignment as they attended a Heflin City Council meeting. At the direction of merit badge counselor, John Howle, Scouts discussed the reporting of the financial situation of the city in a conversation with Heflin City Clerk, Shane Smith. Mayor Rudy Rooks offered the scouts a question and answer period with topics discussed ranging from the current status of the Heflin Industrial Park to what programs and future events are planned by the City. Current state and national concerns from gun rights and control to how the City prepares for or prevents terrorist acts were fielded by the Mayor and Council members.
