Re “Change needed for Woodstock 5K” (Speak Out, April 21):

As a homeowner on Woodland Avenue, where the road meets with Rocky Hollow Road and Davis Road, I take extreme offense at the comments of Banyon Allison of Oxford in Speak Out. I take umbrage at the wide strokes Allison uses to paint a picture of one of Anniston’s oldest neighborhoods. It is an affront to the proud residents of this lovely, wonderful place to live. Don’t condemn an entire neighborhood based on a few areas that still need work.

I was quoted in the Sept. 23, 2012, edition of The Star as stating “enough is enough” when a concerned group of residents initiated a cleanup of some of the neglected properties on Rocky Hollow Road. We were joined by the fire department, police department and city leaders in our efforts.

This year we have formed a neighborhood organization, Rocky Hollow Neighborhood Association, and conducted our most recent cleanup on April 6. Various elected officials are in support of our ongoing commitment to take back our neighborhood.

In conjunction with the city-wide cleanup on April 27, the Rocky Hollow Neighborhood Association will continue in its efforts with an additional cleanup as well as stenciling house numbers on the curbs and locating our neighbors who are elderly or infirmed to help them maintain their properties.

To date, we have made great strides in improving the quality of life for all our residents.

We will not be able to solve all our problems overnight because it took years to get this way. However, we are serious in our commitment and will continue on a steady course towards having our neighborhood flourish once again. With the continued support of our proud residents, city officials and police and fire departments, our continuing endeavor of restoring our neighborhood will be a success story that can be a model for other areas facing the same situation.

We have not run our course; we are just beginning and are going forward at full speed.
