Small Talk: Children’s Services hosts Cinco De Mayo beer tasting

Is the spring weather making you feel ready for a fiesta? Well, you’re in luck, amigo: The Board of Directors of Children’s Services Inc. invites you to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with them at their sixth annual beer tasting to benefit the Parris Home for Children. Dinner, dancing, live music plus a DJ, not to mention sample brews from more than nine breweries. How could you possibly go wrong?

This lively event at the Anniston Country Club is scheduled for Friday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 each. Thanks to generous corporate sponsorships secured by chairperson Braxton Harris Jr., all proceeds from this event will provide much-needed direct support to the Parris Home for Children.

In celebration of the Cinco de Mayo theme, Scott Skinner, Pam Fite and Brigitte Miller will transform the Anniston Country Club with south of the border decorations of white, green and red. The ambiance is guaranteed to put you in an “Ole!” state of mind ...

John Fuller and Ted Heathcox have once again arranged for the No Penalty band to perform. No Penalty’s lively blend of old and new music has always delighted guests, and this year will prove no different. When the band needs a break, DJ Blake Arthur will step in to ensure that the music and dancing do not stop — after all, it’s a fiesta, not a siesta.

Southeastern regional breweries graciously donating products for tasting include Back Forty Beer Company, Avondale Brewery, Blue Pants Brewery and Cheaha Brewery. Through donations from Supreme Beverage, guests will also be able to sample offerings from Terrapin, Sweetwater and Dead Guy. The chairperson may have a few other breweries lined up to participate, but he’s keeping them a surprise.

A cash bar will also be available for those who don’t care for beer. Margaritas, anyone?

The appetizers and dinner buffet will feature a mouth-watering variety of Mexican favorites. Of course, chips and salsa will be on hand to complement all those wonderful beers — it’s natural, right? The taco bar will feature beef and chicken, hard and soft tortilla shells, and every topping imaginable to create your personal perfecto grande taco. Spanish rice, refried beans, roasted corn and cheese-chorizo dip will also tempt your palate. In the unlikely event that you have any room left, mini-desserts will be offered.

Tickets can be purchased from any CSI board member or by calling the CSI office at 256-236-3434. Seating is limited and tickets are going fast, so please make like Speedy Gonzales and get yours pronto!
