A man was charged Tuesday with endangering the welfare of two boys last month.

Steven William Akers, 51, of Jacksonville, was charged with letting 15-year-old and 11-year-old brothers ride around Saks in an open trunk on March 17.

Akers allowed the boys to ride in the car with the trunk open and their legs hanging out of the back, according to Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks. Police pulled the car over near 44th Street and Skyline Drive, Sparks said.

Sparks was uncertain how the boys knew Akers.

The Department of Human Resources and Anniston police investigated the incident before charging Akers.

Akers was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, according to police reports.

Akers was released from the Anniston City Jail Tuesday on a $1,000 bond, Sparks said.

A court appearance is scheduled for May 1.
