The Calhoun County Career Technical Center’s culinary team participated March 2 in the Alabama State Culinary competition at Culinard in Birmingham. The team was required to prepare a chicken velouté dish with squash melody, green beans and mashed potatoes. A field green salad with fresh raspberry vinaigrette and toasted almonds was also required as an accompaniment dish. The team was given two hours and five minutes to plan, prep, prepare, plate, present and clean up in a restaurant style setting with ‘Iron Chef’ conditions.
This was the team’s first year to participate in this competition, and after much practice and hard-work, they placed 10th in the state and received bronze medals. The team is led by culinary instructor Kasie Hairrell and consisted of the following students: Kendyl Womack and Amanda Roche, both of Saks High School; Chelsea Hubbard and Amber Wojnarowski, both of Wellborn High School.
