Oxford Lt. L.G. Owens said Walter Kennon Bush, 59, of Bowden, Ga. was charged with first-degree robbery today after he stole money from the Chevron located on U.S. Highway 78. Owens said Oxford police were called to the gas station shortly after Bush left the store around 9:39 a.m. Employees told police Bush approached the register and said “you’re being robbed,” Owens said.
The employee told police she was concerned Bush had a gun because he kept his hands in his jacket pocket, Owens said. A weapon was not recovered by police.
“She gave him an undisclosed amount of cash and he left,” Owens said.
Bush fled the store in a silver 1997 Honda Accord, Owens said. After responding to the call, Oxford police notified several agencies of the incident.
Interim Heflin Police Chief Captain A. J. Benefield said Heflin police officers spotted and detained Bush at mile marker 207 on eastbound Interstate 20. They released him into the custody of Oxford Police after officers identified him, Benefield said.
Owens said Oxford police confirmed Bush was the robbery suspect through Chevron surveillance footage. Bush travelled from Georgia to “visit family and seek employment,” Owens said.
Bush was in the Oxford City Jail as of Friday afternoon. Bond and a court date have yet to be scheduled.
