Lincoln coach Ryan Herring will become the next head football coach at Oxford High School, according to a source close to the Lincoln program.

According to the source, Herring, an Oxford alum, informed the players and coaches he would be changing jobs in a team meeting on Thursday.

The source also said Herring told Lincoln Principal Terry Roller the only way he would leave Lincoln was if he got a coaching offer from his home school.

Herring played at Oxford for his father, Robert Herring, a two-time hall of famer who coached at Oxford for 14 seasons and guided the Yellow Jackets to three state championships (1988, 1989 and 1993).

Ryan Herring is expected to be introduced officially Monday during an Oxford City Board of Education meeting. The Oxford native replaces John Grass, who left to be the offensive coordinator at Jacksonville State University.

For Lincoln, this is the third coach in as many years that has left after one season, and this is their fourth coach since Keith Howard passed away during a football game in 2009.

In Ryan Herring’s only season at the helm at Lincoln, the team went 6-6 and earned a trip to the second round of the AHSAA playoffs.

When Ryan Herring was contacted on Wednesday by The Daily Home, he said it was going to be a hard decision because he felt like Lincoln had a chance of being really be good next season, but he also acknowledged it would be hard to turn down going back home.

Attempts by The Daily Home to reach Roller late Friday night were unsuccessful. Attempts by The Star to reach Oxford athletic director Larry Davidson were also unsuccessful.

Ryan Herring got his first head coaching job in 2006 at Shelby County, where he stayed six years reaching the playoffs three times. He is 46-31 all time as a head coach.
