Jacksonville State sophomore Travis Stout has a school-record 17 saves.
Men at work: Top OVC teams also have top closers
A word to the wise for teams playing in this week’s Ohio Valley Conference baseball tournament: Score early, because given the quality of closers in the league this year, if you’re not leading late, you’re chances of coming back are about as good as making ice in Death Valley. Each of the top four seeds in the tournament that starts Wednesday in Jackson, Tenn., has a closer who won’t give you much. They have been a part of 76 of their teams’ combined 150 wins (60 saves, 16 wins) and have a combined earned run average of 1.59.

Gamecocks get No. 4 seed, will play Colonels in OVC tourney
The final day of the regular season didn’t yield the best of results for Jacksonville State’s baseball team, but in what sets up as one of the most hotly contested Ohio Valley Conference tournaments in memory, the Gamecocks still have as good a shot as anybody. After Saturday’s results, the Gamecocks (32-24) pulled down the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will play fifth-seeded Eastern Kentucky (20-32) in their first game, 3 p.m. Wednesday at The Ballpark at Jackson (Tenn.)

Gamecocks split with Morehead, await tourney fate
Because of the way the schedule fell, a lot of people with the Jacksonville State baseball team might have had hopes for a leisurely Saturday afternoon. It ain’t gonna happen now. After splitting their season-ending doubleheader with Morehead State Friday, the Gamecocks will be spending much of today waiting out the other league scores to learn their OVC Tournament fate.

JSU's Urban ready for Game 3 call
The Jacksonville State baseball team plays its final series of the season this week with a chance to share the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship. It’s going to take a sweep — and a little help — but if it comes down to Saturday to clinch, JSU coach Jim Case has a pitcher who is familiar and comfortable in such high-stakes situations — sophomore Tony Urban.

Former Minnesota quarterback headed to Jacksonville State
When Max Shortell decided it finally was time to get off the wild and confusing ride that was his first two years at Minnesota, nothing was more important than finding the perfect place to land. There were several suitors for a quarterback with 13 games of BCS experience, but it ultimately came down to where he and his gunslinger style fit best. That became Jacksonville State and once he completes the necessary paperwork, he’ll be on his way to becoming a Gamecock “for good.”

Gilliland, Ragan looking to pull off underdog win at Talladega
Every time David Ragan and David Gilliland go to Daytona and Talladega they think this could be the week one of them winds up in Victory Lane. This week it really could happen. And if one takes the checkered flag in Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, while it might be an underdog win, it wouldn’t be an upset. They’ve been that close before.

Coty Blanchard was thinking about doing something a couple of weeks ago that would seem, well, unthinkable, now. The versatile Jacksonville State infielder was considering changing his walkup song. Now, that might not seem like a big deal to some, but ballplayers are a superstitious lot. Just about the time Blanchard was thinking about changing the name of that tune, he got hot at the plate — and so did the Gamecocks. Now, the song that follows the two-sport star to the plate has become something of a team anthem.

All the Jacksonville State hitters remember how hard it was to score on Anthony Ricciardi the first time they faced him this year, so coach Jim Case couldn’t help being impressed with what they did against him Wednesday night. The Gamecocks erupted for three runs in the first and two more in the third against the Alabama State senior right-hander on the way to a 9-2 victory at Rudy Abbott Field.

The guys who live there may be called firemen, but a call to the bullpen from the Jacksonville State dugout isn’t always a call for help. A lot of times this year it has been a call to put the game to bed. The Gamecocks have one of the top stable of stoppers in the reliever-rich Ohio Valley Conference. It has been so deep and — in conference games, at least — so effective, JSU coach Jim Case is not afraid to go to any one of them at any time.

Connor Slane had two pretty good days in his final high school tournament before the state sectionals. All he did was win medalist honors, be selected for the event’s $1,000 scholarship and make a shot that clinched the team victory. His birdie on the first hole of the team playoff Tuesday secured Pelham High’s win in the fourth annual Kelsey Goodwin Memorial Golf Classic at Cider Ridge Golf Club.

Jason Day stands over every shot here feeling like it’s the biggest shot he’s ever hit in his life. This place, this tournament, this major, has a way of making you feel that way. With that kind of approach — provided, of course, he keeps pulling them off — he could be wearing a green jacket come Sunday evening.
