Oxford wins Saks tourney

Oxford swept its five matches to claim the championship of Saturday’s Saks Invitational volleyball tournament. The Yellow Jackets won for the second consecutive year, and for the second consecutive year the Piedmont Bulldogs ended as the runner-up.
Jordan McCall, both a setter and an outside hitter in Oxford’s 6-2 attack, led her team in the title match with 12 kills and eight assists.
Brooke Vingers had 18 assists and seven aces, junior Allison Schwyn 11 kills and senior libero Brittany Middlebrook 15 digs in the championship match.
In Oxford’s first four matches, Schwyn totaled 32 kills, Jordan McCall 43 assists, Vingers 31 assists and Middlebrook 32 digs.
For the day, Piedmont’s Tara Blanchard had 20 kills, Miranda Stewart and Raven Prater 16 kills each, Paige Smith nine aces, libero Catie Hightower seven aces and setter Brittany Strott 65 assists and eight aces to lead Piedmont’s offense. Janissa McKinney had 13 blocks on defense.
Seniors Kirstin Hill and Lalieta Fluellen led Saks on offense. Hill had 24 kills and 14 aces while Fluellen had 18 kills and six aces. Junior setter Teisha Bates had 56 assists and senior libero Sarah Sensenbach 26 digs for the Wildcats in their first tournament appearance under new coach Mike Tucker.
Donoho got its only win in tournament play over Ranburne (25-14, 25-18) but the Falcons showed promise. Senior middle Frances Barber led Donoho with 25 kills, seven aces and six blocks. Junior setter Kelsy Crawford had 57 assists and 13 aces. Freshman Grace Fink had 22 digs.
White Plains lost to Lincoln 29-27, 25-19 and ended the tournament 0-3. Senior middle Brittany Brooks had 25 kills and 10 blocks and junior setter Laura Roberts 34 assists for the Wildcats.
