The Star wins 12 APA awards

The Anniston Star won 12 awards in the large daily newspaper category of the 2008 Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, including top prizes for editorial writing and best use of photographs. Features editor Laura Tutor and photographer Steve Gross both won a pair of awards. In the Best Special Section category, Star staffers and members of the 2006-07 University of Alabama Community Journalism Masters program in Anniston placed third for Old Guard/New Battle, a series examining the role of the Alabama National Guard in a post-9/11 world. "The awards are recognition of The Star's hard work," said Bob Davis, editor of The Star. "Each member of our newsroom can take pride in these awards." Members of the Arkansas Press Association judged the 2,856 entries submitted by 71 Alabama newspapers. Awards will be handed out on July 19 at the Press Association's annual summer convention. Winners from The Star are: • Best Use of Photographs/Editorial: 1st place, The Anniston Star • Best Editorial: 1st place, The Anniston Star for "Let's be clear: Hire a CEO" by Bob Davis • Best Lifestyle/Family Pages: 2nd place, The Anniston Star • Best Business Story or Column: 2nd place, The Anniston Star for "Labor Unions in Alabama" by Mary Jo Shafer • Best Feature Photo: 2nd place, The Anniston Star for "A Man and His Mule" by Stephen Gross • Best Photo Essay: 2nd place, The Anniston Star for "A Man and His Land" by Stephen Gross • Best Use of Graphics or Illustrations: 2nd place, The Anniston Star for "Meet Sue" by Tosha Jupiter • Best Feature Story: 3rd place, The Anniston Star for "Haunted Mind" by Brett Buckner • Best Humorous Column: 3rd place, The Anniston Star for "Dealing with egg-plosions in the kitchen" by Laura Tutor • Best Human Interest Column: 3rd place, The Anniston Star for "A question of protection" by Laura Tutor • Best Editorial Column or Commentary: 3rd place, The Anniston Star for "Farewell to the grange" by Hardy Jackson • Best Special Section: 3rd place The Anniston Star/Com-J for "Old Guard, New Battle" by staff |
