SEC baseball: Auburn coach says he still thinks Tigers will land NCAA baseball bid

Auburn may yet play in its first NCAA regional since 2010, but the Tigers didn’t help their cause in Hoover on Tuesday. A 6-3 loss to Alabama in the single-elimination play-in round of SEC tournament blunted Auburn’s late-season surge and gave the Tigers and the NCAA selection committee six days to ponder them before Monday’s announcement of the field.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops questioned recently whether the Southeastern Conference really is the best football conference, basing much of his argument on the ability of the weakest teams. Stoops says his own Big 12 Conference has better teams at the bottom. While Alabama coach Nick Saban told AL.com on Thursday night he has better things to do than worry about what Stoops is saying, I apparently don't. Especially when sitting through rain delays at high school softball regional tournaments.

Depending on who makes 53-man rosters, Sept. 26 and Dec. 1 will be two dates for Auburn fans to watch during the 2013 NFL season. St. Louis, which hosts NFC West rival San Francisco on the former date, signed tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, linebacker Daren Bates and wide receiver Emory Blake as free agents within 48 hours of the conclusion of last week’s NFL draft. Any or all of those former Tigers could face their longtime teammate, defensive end Corey Lemonier, selected in the third round Friday by the 49ers. They will host the second matchup this fall.

Linebacker/safety Daren Bates was honored with both the Zeke Smith Award (defensive player of the year) and Mike Kolen Award as top tackler, amassing 94 stops last year.
