The year Alabama legislators took over schools
My father grew up poor and never finished high school but was incredibly resourceful. He could “figure things out.” He did his own plumbing, wiring and construction. But on occasion, Dad’s chief asset became a liability. So confident was he in his ability to fix anything that he refused to admit that he didn’t know everything.

What is South’s role? Southern Democrats may derail immigration reform
Ever since President Obama announced his intention to fight — again — for broad-ranging immigration reform in his Feb. 13 State of the Union address, media coverage has been dominated by his struggle to find common ground with the so-called Gang of Eight key U.S. Senators, including Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.

A health-care provider’s alternate perspective
As a rural pharmacist who runs a small business, I am a part of the health-care delivery system. I dispense prescriptions to people in all walks of life, race, creed and colors. I serve those covered under Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. I know what people go through to make sure they have the drugs they need. Many of them juggle payments for bills and food for their families with paying for the drugs and procedures they need.

‘The lack of understanding among people of where their food and fiber comes from’
John McMillan is a small-government guy with a big government office. On Twitter, Alabama’s agriculture commissioner isn’t afraid to play the role of arch-conservative, cheering on the Tea Party and forwarding videos with titles like “Obama supporters: Vandals and Thieves.”

Southern voters: Overall, are they more purple (diverse) than Republican red?
One of the biggest stories coming out of the 2012 elections was the changing demographics of U.S. voters. The increasing racial diversity of the nation’s electorate was key to President Obama’s victory — and cast growing doubts on the long-term viability of a Republican Party if it continued to draw its strongest support from whiter and older voters.

Alabama’s nine electoral votes were virtually predestined for Republican Mitt Romney in last Tuesday’s presidential election. Nevertheless, post-election analysis shows just how red that red-state Alabama really is.

“Hi, this is Tammy with the Hilton Garden Inn-Edison. We have no power, no hot water and no room for board. How may I assist you?” For family and friends of mine, these were the first greetings they received following Hurricane Sandy, and I don’t think we will ever forget them.

Locate Athens, Greece, on a map and trace a line due north. You’ll cross the mainland and a patch of the Aegean Sea before your finger reaches the eastern end of the island of Skopelos. My wife and I spent some time there last month. We saw up close how the country’s ongoing economic crisis is affecting Greeks on an island that’s essentially a small country town.

Let me begin by thanking Barbara Dunn and the Dunn family for intrusting to me the opportunity to present the eulogy at this celebration of life for James A. “Pappy” Dunn. In a sense, I feel inadequate to give the eulogy for Pappy Dunn because his was such a great and impactful life that it is difficult to do justice to it in the form of a eulogy, but I am committed to try. There are two points I would like to make.
