A woman’s car was stolen Friday from an Anniston parking lot and later discovered on fire on Durant Street, according to Anniston police.

Police Sgt. Chris Sparks said a 28-year-old Anniston woman reported her car stolen Friday around 7 p.m. from a parking lot on the 2300 block of Highway 202. Sparks said the victim was getting into her 2004 Lincoln Aviator when a man with a bandana covering his face jumped into the car and drove away. Sparks said no weapons were involved in the theft and no one was injured.

Less than an hour later, police received a call that a vehicle was on fire on the 2800 block of Durant Street, the sergeant said.

“The vehicle was extinguished quickly, but it’s a total loss,” Sparks said.

The vehicle is valued at $8,500, according to a police report.

Police found property inside the vehicle that belonged to the victim, confirming it was the stolen car, Sparks said.

Police were still searching for a suspect Tuesday morning, Sparks said.

A suspect will likely face charges of first-degree theft and first-degree criminal mischief, both felonies, according to a police report.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Investigative Division at 256-240-4000.
