Anniston police say a woman charged with theft Sunday stole jewelry and a car from her great-aunt in 2007.

Melissa Holbrook Herren, 44, of Anniston, was charged with felony first-degree theft.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said Herren was asked by her 76-year-old great-aunt to stay at her home on the 1300 block of Cambridge Place in 2007 to care for the great-aunt’s blind husband. George said that while Herren was in the home, she stole several items from the family.

On Feb. 1, 2007, Herren stole her aunt’s 2003 Buick, George said, and more than $20,000 worth of jewelry and coins and drove to Oxford.

The vehicle was recovered the same day by the victim’s son in an Oxford parking lot, George said.

The victim’s son later told police he confronted Herren in the vehicle and noticed she’d stolen one of his father’s knives, according to the captain. George said the son took the knife and the car, but told police Herren had a suitcase that looked like it was packed for a long trip.

The family discovered the jewelry was missing five days later, when the victim returned home from the hospital, George said.

Police were able to recover all the missing jewelry from an Oxford pawn shop, George said.

George said today he believed Herren left town several years ago, but the captain was uncertain how police discovered she’d returned to Anniston.

Herren was in the Calhoun County Jail this afternoon. Bond is set at $20,000. A court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 12.
