The Cleburne County Board of Education Monday night unanimously approved hiring Rick Carter as Cleburne County High School principal and Greg Corkren as Cleburne County Middle School principal for the coming school year.

Superintendent Claire Dryden, who interviewed candidates for the positions and made the recommendations to the board, said both men stood out in their own ways.

Carter, who served one year as principal of Cleburne County High School several years ago, will be welcomed back to the school system, Dryden said.

Carter currently serves as principal of Walter Wellborn High School. He became principal there four years ago while the school was on academic alert and under his tenure the school has become the leader in Calhoun County in academic progress, Dryden said.

“The fact that he is high school principal of the year, I think speaks volumes,” Dryden said, referring to the award presented to him by the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools.

He has an extensive knowledge of curriculum and has started some innovative programs in Wellborn, she said.

Carter served as assistant principal at Oxford High School and Talladega High School according to the Wellborn High School website. He’s also worked as teacher and football coach at schools in Alabama and Tennessee.

Attempts to reach Carter were unsuccessful.

Corkren served as assistant principal at the Cleburne County High School in November and December 2012. When Dryden took office as superintendent in January, she appointed him interim principal, she said.

She was impressed with his technical background as well as his work with students struggling with their studies, Dryden said.

He served as graduation coach at Oxford High School. It’s a skill that she thinks will benefit all the middle school students, Dryden said.

Corkren declined to comment for this story.
