Randolph County deputies have captured a 16-year-old who is suspected in two separate shootings in the county Sunday night.

Randolph County Sheriff David Cofield said Montoreous Heard, 16, has been charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of his father, Alton Heard, 44, in Wedowee sometime Sunday night. Heard is being charged as an adult, Cofield said.

Heard is also the suspect in a shooting at a gas station in Roanoke around 8 p.m. that killed Richard Jones and left Jones’ wife Mary in critical condition, said Roanoke police Chief Adam Melton.

The Roanoke Police Department responded to a call about a shooting at 431 Fuel Connections along U.S. 431 around 8 p.m. Sunday, Melton said. Mary Jones had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while Richard Jones had suffered one gunshot wound to the chest. Both were airlifted to Columbus Medical Center in Georgia, Melton said. Richard Jones died during transportation. Mary Jones was later taken to the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center and was in critical condition as of 2 p.m., Melton said.

Melton said surveillance footage at the gas station showed a man walking into the store and shooting Mary Jones, who was working at the counter, before shooting Richard. The couple’s two teenage children were present at the shooting, but fled through a back door and were unharmed, Melton said.

Melton said he did not know the ages of the couple, but knew them personally and said they were fixtures in the community.

A motive for the crime is unknown. Melton said no money was stolen from the store, but the suspect did take a pack of cigarettes.

The suspect left in a white Ford truck, Melton said.

Deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were assisting Roanoke police in the crime scene investigation, Sheriff Cofield said, when Cofield received a call about a shooting at County Road 809 near Wedowee. Investigators found the body of Alton Heard, who had suffered a gunshot wound. Shortly afterward, deputies apprehended Montoress Heard, who was walking near the crime scene.

Cofield said deputies recovered a white Ford truck Monday morning, abandoned a mile off of the highway. Cofield said the truck belonged to Alton Heard.

Melton said Roanoke police also have collected the handgun they believed was used in both shootings. He said they’ve also collected clothing from the suspect. Heard was charged in Randolph County with capital murder but had not been charged in Roanoke as of 2 p.m. Melton said investigators were gathering evidence and getting an update on the condition of Mary Jones. Melton said they would seek capital murder charges in Roanoke.

Cofield said the motive for the shootings was unknown, but said an altercation likely took place between Heard and his father.
