I guess every kid is a little nervous and a whole lot apprehensive when beginning a new year at a new school, especially when you do not know half the kids there. That is how I felt in the fall of 1954 when they combined Mechanicsville and Eulaton junior high schools into Walter Wellborn High School.

One of the first people I met at the new school was Lucy Hamilton, and she made me feel so good that I couldn’t wait to get to school the next day. After meeting Lucy, all my fears evaporated overnight. We both went on to become part of the first graduating class at Wellborn High School in 1957.

This past Sunday we lost Lucy Hamilton Turley, and the class of ’57 will never be the same. Every time I lose someone from our class of ’57, I think of the Statler Brothers’ song, “And the class of ’57 had its dreams.”

I think Lucy, my super sweet classmate of ’57, had all her dreams fulfilled in this life and is now in God’s care.
