The D.D. Club of Anniston/Calhoun County held its annual tea and barbecue in the late spring for prospective new members.

The tea — a great “getting to know you” opportunity — was held at the lovely home of Alex Woodfin (who was, at the time, a senior at the Donoho School). Alex’s parents, Donna and Brian Woodfin, graciously welcomed the cadre of young ladies to the poolside soiree.

Another Donoho School senior, Cowan Angell, along with her parents, Clayton and Ann Angell, hosted a fun, informal barbecue for the girls. Ann’s brother, Patrick Porteous, cooked for the group, a gesture that did not go unappreciated.

The D.D. Club, a community service-based high school sorority, was founded in 1929. This year’s outgoing president was Katherine Westbrook, who will attend Auburn University.

After the barbecue, the club selected new officers for 2013-2014. They include Calli Boyles, president; Darsey Norton, vice president; Corey Phillis, secretary; Alayna Hancock and Sarah Holcombe, treasurers; Anna Brooke Payne, service project coordinator; Rylee Segrest, historian; Ashton Gaddy, chaplain; Caroline LaFollette, sergeant-at-arms; Georgia Sedmak, pledge advisor chairperson; and Danielle Bolton, Madison Huckaby and Lydia Pass, pledge advisors.

Before school dismissed for the summer, Danielle Bolton and her parents, Kim and Tony Bolton, hosted the “surprise night” (when pledges for the new year were surprised at their homes and then whisked away to the Boltons’ home.) After the traditional candle-lighting ceremony, Westbrook turned the reins over to Boyles.

Outgoing seniors enjoying their last D.D. Club event included Cowan Angell, Mallory Haynes, Esther Grubbe, Adele Fink, Samantha Kerper, Savanna Marion, Ali Morris, Erin Phillis, Emily Rogers, Lauren Rothwell, Emily Schaefer, Ashton Shropshire, Savanna Simpson, Anna Turner, Alex Woodfin and Katherine Westbrook.

Pledge class officers are Laura Davenport, president; Lexie Daugherty, vice president; Madison Stephens, secretary; Justine Magadia, treasurer; Kelsey Jackson, sergeant-at-arms; and Maria Limberis, historian.

Other new pledges for 2013 are Alexis Allen, Brianna Anderson, Brooke Brascho, Camille Clark, Anna Laurie Cotton, Haley Cotton, Elli Davis, Kylee Delozier, Lauren Findley, Camille Fink, Heather Floyd, Nicole Goodson, Elizabeth Gunter, Hailye Hatton, Kirin Heathcock, Meredith Howell, Mattie Jackson, Gracie Love, Sara Elizabeth Mason, Bailey McCormick, Shea O’Donnell, Rivers Owsley, Alexis Paige, Brittany Roszell, Olivia Simmons and Anna Marie Woodfin.

The club hit the ground running, with Anna Brooke Payne scheduling lots of community service activities. The girls have worked at Terrific Kids Tuesdays at Quintard Mall, the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame event, the Tastes of Home Habitat for Humanity dinner, the Cerebral Palsy telethon, Woodstock 5K, ARC Adult Camp, Anniston’s Red Cross blood drive, Anniston’s Got Talent and the Kiwanis Club’s back-to-school shopping this summer.
